The cervical bow has an inner bow with a U loop that acts as a stop and adjustment device to lengthen or shorten the bow. Since we use occlusally placed headgear tubes, the U loop points superior. The outer bow is longer than the inner bow, so minimum adjustments need to be made to obtain a force that passes through the center of resistance of the upper first molar if the "string" of the force module is extended. To locate the approximate center of resistance on the face of a patient, mark the outer bow where the mesial of the headgear tube is engaged (just distal to the U loop). Insert the bow in the mouth, then measure 10mm superior and 1mm anterior from the mark on the outer bow, making a dot on the patients' face. Adjust the outer bow up or down with a 3-prong headgear plier until the string would pass through the dot, if extended. Line of force can be checked by taking a lateral ceph with the headgear installed. (sizes 1 to 5, catalog#070-0080 to 070-012).
